How to recognize solid silver jewelry?
Why is this important?
Solid silver is a precious metal much appreciated for its brilliance, durability and natural elegance. However, it can sometimes be difficult to differentiate it from simple costume or plated jewelry.
So how can you recognize solid silver jewelry if you're not an expert? Here are the signs you shouldn't miss!
Check the 925 hallmark
This is the first thing to look for. Solid silver jewelry must bear a "925" hallmark, which means it contains 92.5% pure silver, the rest being copper or other metals for added strength.
On earrings, the hallmark is more complicated to apply, which is why it can often be found on the earring stem. Where to find the hallmark on the pieces? It is often discreet, inside a ring, on the back of a pendant, or on the clasp of a bracelet.
At Lady Taty, all our sterling silver jewelry is hallmarked and certified 925.
Observe color and shine
Solid silver has a subtle shine, softer than the lustre of chrome or stainless steel. It may tarnish slightly over time - this is normal - and is even a sign of authenticity.
On the other hand, costume metal jewelry is often too shiny and artificial, or can turn green or black.
Do the magnet test
Pure silver is not magnetic. If a piece of jewelry reacts to a magnet, it probably contains other metals or is not solid silver. This test is not 100% infallible, but it can be a good first clue and an easy test to apply.
Watch out for the price
A solid silver piece of women's jewelry cannot be sold at a ridiculously low price. If the price seems too good to be true, it's because it's often made of a material other than silver, such as steel or brass. Investing in real silver also means choosing durability and long-term value.
Home test: soft cloth
A soft cloth can make tarnished silver shine again. If a thin black layer forms, this is a sign that the jewel is solid silver, as this metal naturally oxidizes in the open air. Wiping the silver with a soft cloth restores its shine. This technique does not work on steel.
